This soda bread is so simple (only flour, buttermilk, baking soda, and salt) and so quick (one hour)! My favorite way to have it is toasted with almond butter, but my family prefers jam and butter — what do you like?

Hearty Soda Bread

Ingredients

  • cups Irish wholemeal flour
  • cups all purpose flour
  • ½ cup (optional) wheat bran
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Pre-heat the oven to 400˚F.
  • Mix flours, optional wheat bran, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Mix in the buttermilk and then the baking soda. The dough may be soft and sticky but should hold its shape on a flat pan.
  • Use floured hands to transfer to a buttered baking sheet.
  • Bake at 400˚F for 40-45 minutes until browned.
